In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
